16 injured in school shooting in Turkey's Sanliurfa province

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - At least 16 people were injured after a student carried out an armed attack at a school in the Kurdish province of Sanliurfa (Riha) in southeast Turkey. The assailant later committed suicide at the scene, said the governor.

The IHA news agency reported that the attacker carried out the shooting at Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the Hasan Celebi neighborhood. Initial reports indicate that at least 13 students were injured in the incident.

The 19-year-old assailant shot himself with the same weapon after opening random fire in the schoolyard and inside the building.

Health and police teams were dispatched to the scene.

Governor Hasan Sildak told reporters that 10 of the injured are students, four teachers, a police officer, and a canteen staff member.

“He was a boy around 17 or 18 years old. As soon as he entered through the outer gate, he started firing with the long-barreled weapon in his hand. First he fired around randomly, then toward the school. After that, he ran inside the school. He shot directly at whoever came in front of him. Then students started screaming and everyone ran somewhere," IHA cited eyewitness Gokhan Basaranoglu as saying.
