A French team conducted investigations into the history of the castle in 2012 and concluded that it was built 5,000 years ago.
It is debated who has controlled the castle since then.
The region has been under Akkadian, Sumerian, Babylonian, Persian, Ottoman, Arab, and Kurdish rule at different times.
Due to weather changes and negligence, large parts of the castle have collapsed and it faces complete ruin.
