A hard, beautiful life buried under snow in the Kurdistan mountains
This is Derishke village in Duhok province, located on Kurdistan Region’s border with Turkey.
The village is buried in snow in winter, making life beautiful, but difficult.
“I come to this school from Derishke on foot for 2-3 kilometers, but this does not stop us from coming to school,” said a local student. “We come at midday and return home by evening. The weather is freezing.”
Despite the hardships, villager Asma prefers life here rather than in the cities.
“We are used to this life. Our life in the village is better than living in cities. We serve walnuts and currants in winter. It is exciting,” she said.
