President Barzani congratulates Kurdish woman for receiving prestigious award
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani congratulated a young Kurdish woman from northeast Syria (Rojava) on Wednesday after receiving a distinguished award for her humanitarian service.
Roudy Ali, 25, is originally from Afrin city in Rojava but currently lives in Germany. The UK-based Diana Awards announced her as one of the winners of the prestigious prize for 2021 for her campaign to help Syrian women access education and other humanitarian efforts.
“Awarding you is a strong sign that the young people can work on social and humanitarian issues,” Barzani said in a letter shared by Ali on Thursday, adding that he was “very happy” to see her being honored.
Thanking President Barzani for the letter, Ali said that “I am proud to represent the Kurds globally and your words are a great honor for me.”
"Roudy is a Kurdish activist and refugee who was forced to marry and have a child as a minor in Afrin, Syria. She has battled with the effects of war and asylum, in addition to traveling for 28 days to reach Germany,” reads her profile shared by the Diana Awards.
Millions of Syrians, including Kurds, have been fleeing the country since 2011 due to the civil war. The country has been severely damaged by the conflict, with many people lacking access to education.
The institution added that the young woman has also “supported women in refugee camps and organized empowerment sessions for those coming from conservative families and women experiencing marital problems.”
The organization was founded in 1999 in memory of Princess Diana, who died in a car accident two years earlier.
