A visit to Marx’s hometown on his 200th birthday

TRIER, Germany – May 5 will mark the 200th birthday of leftist philosopher and thinker Karl Marx.

The Karl Marx museum in his hometown draws tourists from around the world despite his divisive legacy.

Some of Marx’s ideas are “outdated,” said one visitor. “But even Karl Marx, himself, did not fantasize. We should learn how he would have brought the ideas forward.”

His anti-capitalism stance is still revered in China and a statue of the philosopher created by Chinese artist Wu Weishan stands outside his former home, not far away from a market selling Marx-themed T-shirts, gifts, and wine.
