MOSCOW, Russia - The rise in food prices in Russia will continue to take its toll on the population in the country as experts working in the field of food security call on the Kremlin to speed up its measures aimed at preventing the crisis from further exacerbating.

"The reason for the increase in food shortages is mainly related to the global market shocks, the European turmoil, and, of course, the events in Ukraine. The international community and the market are always reacting to these factors and the reaction is always leading to price hikes," Sergey Shoba, president of the Institute of Natural Security told Rudaw over the weekend in Moscow.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has led to a significant increase in food prices across the world, as well as a spike in global wheat and oil prices.

Black Sea exports of crucial commodities have been disrupted over the past 100 days, in a region that is responsible for providing more than a quarter of the world’s wheat exports.

"Russia can find a solution to itself with many products it has in its possession including meat, and wheat… but we can not provide ourselves with all the products like fruits, and vegetables. That is why the government must fill this gap," he explained.

The Federal Service for State Statistics (Rosstat) has said in its monthly report that consumer prices have risen by 6.2% since May.

Rano Usubjonovna, a local grocer in Moscow decried that the price hikes has largely affected their livelihood and businesses.

“Last year everything was very cheap. We used to sell a kilo of cherries for 200-250 rubles ($4). But this year the cheapest cherry is 450 rubles ($7.10)," Usubjonovna lamented.
