Volunteers mobilize in Polish border town to welcome Ukrainians

PRZEMYSL, Poland - Volunteers in the Polish border town of Przemysl have rushed to welcome Ukrainians into Poland since the invasion started on February 24. They have been cooking food as well as providing clothing and free transportation to other European destinations.

The war in Ukraine has entered its second week and at least 1.2 million Ukrainians have fled to neighboring countries including Poland, Romania, and Moldova since the war began.

According to a tweet by the Deputy Prime Minister of Moldova, Nicu Popescu, over 200,000 Ukrainians have sought shelter in the country, adding that Moldova is the country with “the highest number of refugees per capita.”

For five consecutive days, volunteers from abroad have been cooking and preparing to receive the displaced Ukrainians.

“We are here to do our duties voluntarily,” a volunteer from Germany told Rudaw’s Znar Sino on Saturday.

Telecom companies have also provided free SIM cards in addition to food supplies and clothes.

Poland already has a large and well-integrated community of Ukrainians as many had fled in 2014 when clashes first started with Russia over the annexation of Crimea. Many more are expected to become displaced over the coming days.
