Lebanese PM, Kurdistan Region President discuss regional stability at Munich conference

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam praised his meeting with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference (MSC), describing the talks as “very good” that focused on the need to ease regional tensions.

“Both of us are very worried about the situation in the region and both of us have an interest in things to calm down in the region,” Salam told Rudaw after the meeting.

Salam said Lebanon and the Kurdistan Region share what he called a “common concern” over stability, warning against escalation.

“We have a shared concern, which is stability in the region. No one wants a war here, as the harm would affect everyone. This is the goal and the mutual interest we share with the Kurdistan Region,” he said.

President Barzani arrived in Germany at the invitation of the conference, the Kurdistan Region presidency said. He has attended the MSC for several years, highlighting the Kurdistan Region’s continued engagement in international security discussions.

The 62nd edition of the Munich Security Conference runs from February 13 to 15 at Munich’s Hotel Bayerischer Hof, with more than 1,000 participants expected, including heads of state, government leaders, and senior officials from major international organizations.

This year’s agenda spans a wide range of issues, from global security risks to emerging space-related challenges.

Salam previously pointed to Lebanon’s longstanding ties with Iraq and the Kurdish community. In December, he said Lebanon has always enjoyed “excellent” relations with Iraq and noted that many Kurds live in Lebanon, where they are integrated into society.
