NEW YORK, United States - The United Nations said on Monday that the international community needs to make sure that the ongoing peace process between Turkey and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) does not go backward.
“I think there's been a lot of suffering in the years, and we need to make sure that we support a peaceful process, a process of disarmament, and that people everywhere, anywhere around the world, are guaranteed their rights that are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, told Rudaw.
“The international community needs to do whatever it can to accompany the parties, to ensure that we don't go backwards, and that this is in fact the start of a possibility of dealing with a lot of the longstanding, outstanding issues on this,” he added.
The PKK announced on Monday that it has decided to dissolve itself and lay down arms after months of talks with Ankara. Several Turkish opposition and pro-government media outlets reported that the disarmament process will be carried out under the auspices of the UN.
Dujarric denied the reports.
He also said that Guterres is well-aware of the Kurdish issue, adding that “It's an issue that is close to his heart.”
