President Nechirvan Barzani, German FM discuss bilateral ties
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - President Nechirvan Barzani met with Johann Wadephul, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany, on the sidelines of Munich Security Conference on Sunday, with talks focusing on bilateral relations between Germany and Iraq and Kurdistan Region.
According to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency, the meeting highlighted Germany’s "active role" in the region, with President Nechirvan Barzani conveying "his appreciation for the support and assistance provided by Germany to both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region across various sectors."
Wadephul acknowledged the Kurdistan Region’s role as "a stabilizing force" and reaffirmed Germany’s commitment "to fostering peace in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region,” according to the statement.
"The meeting also addressed the latest developments in the Middle East and their implications," the statement added.
The meeting comes as part of President Barzani's official visit to Germany, where he held high-level talks with several world leaders on the sidelines of the Munich conference, during which international officials praised Erbil as a stabilizing force amid security challenges in the region.
On Saturday, President Barzani met with Nils Schmid, Parliamentary State Secretary to Germany’s Federal Minister of Defence, and reiterated the Region’s appreciation for Germany’s continued support. Schmid said Germany would continue to support Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in preserving peace and stability.
On Friday, President Barzani met German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Reem Alabali Radovan, discussing similar topics and German-funded projects in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, particularly in reconstruction, human development, and reform support.
