ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein late Friday arrived in New York to attend the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in the coming days. The Iraqi prime minister is expected to attend the session as well.

Iraqi state media late Friday cited the foreign ministry as saying that a delegation from the ministry, headed by Hussein, arrived in New York, adding that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani will arrive in the city as well in coming days to attend the annual session.

Sudani is expected to make the trip after presiding over a weekly meeting of his cabinet on Sunday.

“The 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly marks a crucial milestone in the journey towards achieving the 2030 Agenda and the urgent need to put the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) back on track,” says the UN on its website.

The first part of the event will start on Tuesday, lasting for five days. The last meetings will be held on September 26.

“Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all” is the theme of this year’s session, according to the UN.

It is not clear what issues the Iraqi officials will focus on during the annual event but the session takes place at a time when the country is facing major environmental, security and political issues.

Turkey and Iran have dramatically decreased the flow of water into the country, a new wave of dust storms are expected in the coming months, and Turkish and Iranian forces have intensified their attacks against exiled Kurdish armed groups in Iraq and Kurdistan Region.
