US-Iran nuclear talks to be held Friday in Rome: Oman

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The fifth round of the ongoing nuclear talks between the United States and Iran is set to be held in Rome on Friday, Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, the mediator, announced on Wednesday.

“The 5th round of Iran US talks will take place in Rome this Friday 23rd May,” Albusaidi said on X.

On Tuesday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei cast doubt over the renewed talks amid mounting US demands to fully curtail Iran’s uranium enrichment program.

“We do not think they [negotiations] will reach a conclusion now; we do not know what will happen,” Khamenei said.

Indirect Oman-mediated nuclear talks between Washington and Tehran, headed by US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, respectively, resumed on April 12 in Oman.

The talks follow the collapse of the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), under which Iran agreed to scale back its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

The accord unraveled in 2018, when US President Donald Trump, during his first term in office, unilaterally withdrew the US and reimposed biting sanctions on Iran, which in turn began rolling back on its nuclear commitments.

Tehran, however, has repeatedly asserted that atomic weapons go against the Islamic republic’s doctrine and has maintained that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
