Trump, Erdogan to talk ‘bringing peace’ to the Middle East
WASHINGTON, United States – US President Donald Trump said he will call his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday to discuss peace in the Middle East.
The two leaders will talk “about bringing peace to the mess that I inherited in the Middle East,” Trump tweeted Friday.
“I will get it all done,” he pledged, saying it was a “mistake” for the United States to be there in the first place – costing lives and $6 trillion.
Trump has criticized his predecessor’s Middle Eastern policy, especially Barack Obama’s signing the nuclear deal with Iran – an agreement Trump has described as the worse ever.
Their phone call comes amid intensive diplomatic efforts, led by Russia, to propel Syrian peace talks forward as military operations wind down in the war-ravaged country.
Relations between the NATO allies have been strained after Turkey arrested a local employee of the US consulate in Istanbul, leading to the two suspending some visa services.
Trump stated on Twitter that he is fitting his phone call in before a round of golf.
