New York Kurds show solidarity with Rojava

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Freezing weather of New York did not prevent Kurds and their friends from taking to streets in support of Rojava on Saturday. 

Kurdish areas of Syria have been under attack for days despite a US-brokered ceasefire. 

The four-day ceasefire between the Syrian Arab Army and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) was extended for 15 days on Saturday.

“Our elderly, our women, our trucks in Kobane for days without food, without water, without shelter. It is our honor to amplify their voice. You are not alone. We are here,” Xeyal Qertel, an organizer of the demonstration, told Rudaw. 

“This is not fair. We want justice for our people and Rojava is Kurdistan. It is not a part of Syria,” said another protester.

Despite the humanitarian crisis caused by the Syrian army’s attacks, the world has remained largely silent. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) played a key role in supporting the US-led coalition in defeating the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria, yet none of these states have come to their aid.

“I'm not sure what they're going to do because everybody is silent right now. They act like they don't see, they don't hear anything, but they have to act right now,” said another protester.
