Mountaineering is a burgeoning activity in the Kurdistan Region, attracting local and foreign men and women.

Many go on guided tours and enjoy the challenge coupled with breathtaking scenery. At times, it is an adventure sport.

"You should be more careful here because falling or skidding might endanger your life," said one participant, as she carefully navigated along a rocky ledge.

Hiking sticks and proper footwear make the treks safer and more enjoyable, while backpacks are needed in the backcountry.

Some of the places are remote where few humans are known to have set foot or explored.

Despite the need for food and hydration, they are careful to not pollute the environment.

"It's good to eat fruit and juice," explained another hiker. "But we shouldn't leave rubbish behind.

Participants say the treks make them feel healthier.

The reward after four hours of hiking is traditional Kurdish music as kabobs cook over the fire.

People want others to come and enjoy the mountains of Kurdistan responsibly.

"These mountains are rich in history," explained one participant. "Our youth can get to know the history of Kurdistan here. They calm the human soul and mind.

"They can see the green and pure sole of Kurdistan.”
