ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A local official in Duhok province believes the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK)’s activities have been affected by recent US bounties on the heads of three senior commanders of the party.

The US last week announced bounties collectively totaling up to $12 million for information leading to the capture of three senior PKK leaders: Murat Karayilan, Cemil Bayik, and Duran Kalkan.

“This has made the PKK show up less often,” Sarbast Akrayi, head of Kani Masi sub-district, told Rudaw English on Wednesday.

Kani Masi is located in Duhok province’s Amedi district on the Kurdistan Region’s border with Turkey.

With the PKK less active, Turkish bombardments have decreased, Akrayi explained.

Turkey frequently carries out airstrikes against alleged PKK positions in the Kurdistan Region. The country’s Ministry of Defence reported on Tuesday they have “neutralized” 57 “terrorists” in aerial operations in northern Iraq in the last four days. Turkish armed forces use the term “neutralized” to refer to those killed, wounded, or otherwise removed from the battlefield.

The Amedi district has always been a hotspot for conflict, both the decades-long PKK-Turkey conflict and Kurdish uprisings against the former Iraqi regime.

“Therefore, the people are used to such things,” Akrayi said of the reaction of local residents to the bombardments.

The most devastating period of the PKK-Turkey conflict in this area was between 2015 and 2017 when 4,000 acres of land were desolated, 26 villages were abandoned, and 18 houses were destroyed, Akrayi explained.

The people were left with an estimated 2.3 billion dinars ($1.9 million) in material losses, the official said.

There are 76 villages in the sub-district with a population of 10,000.

The PKK have not completely halted activities, however. Guerrilla forces attacked Turkish positions in Erbil province’s Sidakan sub-district early on Wednesday, which was followed by Turkish bombardment on the region, according to local mayor Ihsan Chalabi.

"Turkey bombarded Mount Del and borders of Khalifan, Siran, Shelkan, and Blasanan villages at 9:00 am, Wednesday, lasting for 45 minutes," he told Rudaw, adding that the attack was in response to a PKK strike half an hour earlier.

There were no reports of casualties or material losses.

PKK or no PKK, Kurds are terrorist as far as Turkey is concern. The fascist regime of Turkey was killing Kurds well before PKK ever existed and will continue killing Kurds if PKK is evaporate tomorrow. PKK has been used by Turkey as an excuse for killing Kurds, dividing Kurds and discrediting Kurds. If no PKK tomorrow, the fascist regime of Turkey will find another group to blame.

If Turkey is so interested in killing terrorists, did they issue any bounties for members of Hamas firing rockets over into Israel? Oh yeah, they are one of the supporters of Hamas.

    Don’t spread propaganda
@ “End this war” - Obviously you are Turkish, friend. The PKK is for peace, you know that. Nice try though.

PKK need to fuck off and stop bringing the war against Turkey into KRG. This war cannot be spread to KRG or other Kurdish regions. All that does is unite Turks, Arabs and Iranians. The struggle in one part of Kurdistan must always be largely separate from the struggle in another part of Kurdistan. It is impossible for all of Kurdistan to achieve autonomy and independence at once. It can only be done region by region lead by local Kurds of that area. What PKK is doing in engaging in war with Turkey is counter-productive and by bringing this war to peaceful KRG they are causing problems for all Kurds. PKK followers cannot understand this because they are brainwashed to think they are above other Kurds and never question their leaders. But the rest of us have an obligation to protect Kurdistan from PKK and their suicidal policies.

    End this war
Obviously this war is in the best interests of Turkey, and probably it is Turkey who command secretly the PKK with the aim to destroy Kurds everywhere. The PKK is even against Kurdish independence, it fellow a secret Turkish agenda to impose genocide on Kurds. I call the USA to mediate and finish this racist war on Kurds.
