ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Haider al-Abadi’s campaign stop in Duhok has been cancelled until further notice, an official has confirmed.

Prime minister and head of the Victory (Nasr) Coalition, Abadi is campaigning for re-election in the Kurdistan Region. He was in Sulaimani on Wednesday evening and in Erbil Thursday morning, introducing his list’s candidates in both provinces for the May 12 Iraqi parliament elections.

He was expected to stop in Duhok next, including a visit to Khanke township to meet with Yezidis, Nasir Barwari, head of the Victory Alliance in Duhok, told Rudaw.

“It is not clear when will Abadi pay the visit,” Barwari said. He did not explain why the trip was postponed.

A delegation from the list will go to Duhok to discuss a plan for when Abadi does make the trip, Barwari said.

Abadi is the first Arab Iraqi politician to campaign in the Kurdistan Region.

"This is the first time that an Iraqi politician, not only from the post-2003 history, but from the foundation of Iraq in 1921, this is the first political leader to come to the Kurdistan Region to campaign for his campaign with the view to prove that there is Iraqi citizenship," Jarjis Gulizada, who tops the list for Abadi’s alliance in Erbil, told Rudaw in an interview earlier this week.
