ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Haider al-Abadi, prime minister of Iraq, discussed the question of Shingal and the presence of Turkish troops in the Nineveh Plains with his Turkish counterpart Binali Yildirim in a phone call on Tuesday.

Commenting on the recent confrontations between Peshmerga and the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in the Shingal region, Abadi told Yildirim that “the Iraqi central forces in collaboration with the Peshmerga administrate the situation of Shingal and the Iraqi government does not allow any meddling in this regard,” according to a statement from Abadi’s office.

Abadi also told Yildirim that Turkey “should withdraw its troops in Iraq as this question is related to the sovereignty of Iraq.”

Turkish forces are currently present in the Bashiqa area northeast of Mosul where they have been training local forces in the fight against ISIS. Baghdad has repeatedly called on Ankara to withdraw their forces from Iraqi territory.

According to the statement from Abadi’s office, Abadi also discussed the Mosul operation and explained that “despite the large numbers of refugees, the operation goes on well and the Iraqi government has provided the refugees’ necessities.”

The Iraqi premier stressed maintaining bilateral relations between Baghdad and Ankara “on a high level.”

For his part, Yildirim invited Abadi to visit Ankara.
