ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Russia has delivered 36 T-90 main battle tanks to Iraq.
Maj. Gen. Osman al-Ghanimi, the Iraqi Army Chief of Staff, announced on Monday that the tanks will be integrated into the Iraqi Security Forces' armored brigades in late-April.
The T-90 came into service in 1993 and is a third generation tank.
Ghanimi made the announcement while inspecting Basra Operations Command.
He stressed that security forces preserve the property and security of the Iraqi people and "extend bridges of confidence."
Iraq signed a contract with Russian manufacturer Uralvagonzavod to receive 73 T-90s in July to bolster its already sizable fleet of American-made M1 Abrams and T-72s, the T-90's older brother.
