ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iraqi security forces arrested an ISIS militant who had tortured for the terror group, the Interior Ministry announced.
“The intelligence and counter-terrorism unit in Kirkuk… on Wednesday arrested a key ISIS leader in the area of Wasit in Kirkuk province,” Saad Maan, spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior, announced in a statement.
The arrested person “worked as a torturer with ISIS,” he added.
The unnamed person has been referred to a court for legal proceedings.
Former Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory over ISIS in Iraq almost one year ago. The group remains a serious security threat, however. Security forces carry out daily raids and arrests against suspected ISIS militants and hideouts. Remnants of the group are particularly active in security gaps between Iraqi and Peshmerga forces in the disputed areas like Kirkuk.
Another ISIS member, a member of the group’s religious police known as Hisbah, was arrested by police in Mosul on Wednesday, the Ministry of Defence announced.
