ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Syrian air defences intercepted and shot down several Israeli missiles targeting Damascus airport on Saturday evening, according to Syria’s state news agency SANA.

“Our air defense systems thwarted an Israeli missile aggression,” the agency quoted a military source as saying.

The Israeli military refused to comment when approached by Reuters.

A UK-based war monitor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the missiles hit a weapons depot outside the airport.

“The missiles, suspected to be Israeli, destroyed an arms warehouse near the Damascus international airport,” Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

There are currently no reports of casualties.

Israel has frequently targeted Syrian military facilities and positions alleging the presence of Iranian personnel and weaponry.

Iran has intervened in the Syrian civil war in support of President Bashar al-Assad.

Israel has said it will not tolerate Iran's presence in bordering Syria and has demanded its complete withdrawal.
