ISTANBUL, Turkey – Turkish police detained 127 people trying to stage a march for International Workers Day on Wednesday, despite a ban on protests. 

Protesters were detained when they tried to enter Taksim Square, according to Istanbul police. AFP reported that protesters were treated roughly by police during arrests. 

Tensions are high in Istanbul after the contested March 31 municipal elections that saw the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP)’s candidate Ekrem Imamoglu just squeeze past the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). AKP has requested a re-do of the vote in Istanbul. 

An officially-sanctioned Workers Day event in Istanbul’s Bakirkoy district was attended by several thousand people, according to AFP. 

In Sanliurfa, at least five people were killed when a bus overturned. The bus was carrying workers going to attend a Workers Day event. Thirteen others were injured in the accident, Anadolu Agency reported

"I celebrate the May 1 Labor and Solidarity Day of all our workers and laborers whose sweat plays an important role in the growth and development of our country," President Recep Tayyip Erdogan tweeted on Wednesday.
