With the fall season in full swing, pomegranates are being harvested in the Kurdistan Region.
The people of Halabja showcased the seed-bearing fruit in its full and varied glory at the province's fifth annual pomegranate festival on Friday.
The province is renowned for its juicy pomegranates, and a big contributor to Kurdistan's harvest of the fruit. Nearly 35,000 tons of pomegranate are produced there every year.
Pomegranates are eaten fresh, turned into juices and syrups, and used in pickling.
The festival, supported by the Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Agriculture, hopes to boost the domestic produce market.
