ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Young entrepreneurs from Erbil have launched their own brand of sunglasses carved out of wood. Pretty soon they hope to build their own factory to locally manufacture this new must-have accessory and provide jobs to young people.

“The government does not provide any jobs. We want to end the grievances of young people,” Kamaran Safar, one of the owners of Kurd Wears, told Rudaw English.

“We are a small group of young people who have big dreams, and we want to make a change. Because we believe that young people can make change even if they are not employed by government,” one of the Region’s biggest employers.

The sunglasses are made from maple and bamboo wood. Engravings on the frames are inspired by Kurdish culture. Further production is currently suspended while they establish their factory.

The team consists of five entrepreneurs, each working on their own specialism. Kurd Wears has no external funding and, like many new local enterprises, it has suffered a few teething problems.

“Everything has its own difficulties but we are determined and have a vision that keeps us working hard towards our goal,” said Safar.

Finding good quality sunglasses in the Kurdistan Region’s markets is not easy, as many of products on sale are fake knockoffs of big foreign brands.

Kurd Wears is “trying to build a name that people can trust, a name that stands out and offers our people the best quality product at a reasonable price,” the young entrepreneur said.

Their current range of sunglasses sell for around $50 (60,000 IQD) and can be purchased online on the Kurd Wears Facebook page. New collections are in the pipeline.
