ERBIL, Kurdistan Region -Iran executed Ali-Sina Mostafavi, a musician and professional mountaineer from the southeastern province of Kerman, on Wednesday after convicting him of “waging war against God” over alleged armed attacks, according to the judiciary, a day after a rights group warned that his execution was imminent.
The Iranian judiciary’s media center said Mostafavi was executed Wednesday morning after the Supreme Court upheld his death sentence, according to a statement carried by state media.
The judiciary accused Mostafavi of carrying out shootings in Kerman on March 24 and April 21, allegedly injuring several people, including a young girl. It also claimed he had attempted two other shootings targeting police along the Kerman-Mahan road.
His execution comes amid a wave of executions linked to the nationwide anti-government protests that erupted in December 2025 and continued into January. Human rights organizations have condemned the use of the death penalty against protesters and raised concerns about unfair trials and confessions obtained under torture.
The judiciary further alleged that messages recovered from Mostafavi's phone showed he had expressed willingness to carry out an attack at Kerman airport.
It also accused him of filming locations struck during the war involving Iran, Israel and the United States and sending the footage to opposition media outlets.
Iranian authorities alleged that Mostafavi had acted in support of Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of Iran's last shah, and Israel. The judiciary also acknowledged that Mostafavi had participated in January's unrest and sent photographs and videos to media outlets abroad.
The allegations against Mostafavi could not be independently verified.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news outlet of the Prisoners' Rights League in Iran, Mostafavi was arrested at his home on April 25 and was allegedly beaten by security forces during his arrest.
The rights group reported that Branch 1 of the Kerman Revolutionary Court sentenced him to death and that Branch 41 of the Supreme Court upheld the ruling on September 28.
On Tuesday, Breathing in Confinement warned that Mostafavi had been transferred to solitary confinement in Kerman prison, raising concerns that his execution was imminent.
The group also described Mostafavi as an accomplished mountaineer who had climbed Island Peak and Kala Patthar in Nepal and attempted to summit Ama Dablam in the Himalayas.
US-based Iranian civil society organization Tavaana separately identified Mostafavi as a musician and professional mountaineer who had participated in January's anti-government protests.
The organization reported that he had been transferred to solitary confinement at Kerman's Shahab prison on Tuesday and that prison authorities had contacted his family to arrange a final visit. It also published footage it identified as showing Mostafavi playing music.
In a September report, Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO) identified at least 100 protesters arrested in connection with January's unrest who were at risk of the death penalty, including five who were under 18 at the time of their alleged offenses and five women.
The organization warned that the documented cases represented only a fraction of those at risk across Iran.
IHRNGO reported on October 5 that at least 34 people had been executed in connection with the December 2025-January 2026 protests since March 19.
Amnesty International, in a statement on Tuesday, also documented at least 34 protest-related executions and condemned what it described as grossly unfair trials, allegations of torture and the use of forced confessions.
