ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A tourist bus overturned in Iraq’s northern Nineveh province on Saturday, killing at least four people and injuring 20 others, according to a provincial council member.
“According to preliminary figures, four have died and 20 others are wounded,” Muhammad Jasim Kakayi, a member of Nineveh’s provincial council, told Rudaw’s Nahro Mohammed.
Ehsan Sheikh Issa, head of the Hotels and Motels Association, said the accident occurred around 30 kilometers before the Hammam al-Alil checkpoint, south of Mosul.
Issa added that the tourists were traveling from Babylon province to Duhok when the accident occurred. Some of the injured were taken to Shirqat Hospital, while others were transferred to hospitals in Mosul.
Traffic accidents remain a persistent problem on Iraq’s highways, with officials frequently citing speeding, poor road conditions, and vehicle safety issues as contributing factors.
Iraq’s planning ministry said in June that the country, excluding the Kurdistan Region, recorded 11,948 traffic accidents in 2025, including 1,900 fatal accidents.
The accidents claimed 2,351 lives and injured 11,564 others.
