ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader President Masoud Barzani said Sunday that relations between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and Iraq’s federal government are in a “very good” phase, citing a high level of coordination between Erbil and Baghdad.
“The relations between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Iraqi federal government under PM Ali al-Zaidi are in a very good phase, with a high level of understanding and coordination between the two sides,” Barzani said.
Barzani made the remarks during a meeting with Holly Vare, the newly appointed British consul general in Erbil, in discussions regarding Iraq’s political situation, relations between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government, and recent regional developments, according to a statement from Barzani’s office.
Barzani’s comments come after several months of renewed dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad under Iraq’s new government, following years of disputes over issues including the Kurdistan Region’s budget allocations, civil servant salaries and oil exports.
Kurdistan Region president Nechirvan Barzani recently met with Iraqi PM Ali al-Zaidi and key political leaders last Wednesday to discuss national challenges and regional stability. The visit underscored a shared commitment to strengthening cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad and a call for unified coordination to protect Iraq’s future.
This follows earlier convenings in May when Kurdistan Region PM Masrour Barzani visited Baghdad for talks with PM Ali al-Zaidi on outstanding disputes. The new Iraqi government agreed to incorporate a proposed resolution of the Kurdistan Region’s civil servant salary dispute into its ministerial program, according to Kurdish lawmaker Ashwaq Jaf’s remarks to Rudaw, while officials on both sides have expressed optimism about improving relations.
Zaidi had told Rudaw earlier in May that he reached a “good understanding” with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on outstanding issues, saying steps had been taken to facilitate their resolution under his administration.
