The Syrian civil war that began in 2011 has claimed the lives of at least 350,000 people and caused the displacement of millions more.
Kurds in Syrian Kurdistan or Rojava carved out a self-styled autonomous region shortly after the start of the civil war.
Rojava’s western canton of Afrin has been under a Turkish military offensive since January 20. The UK-based monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put the civilian death toll in the Afrin operation at 199 as of Thursday.
