Yalda night is the first night of winter and it is the longest. It is celebrated by many Kurds, especially in eastern Kurdistan (Iran). In recent years in the Kurdistan Region it has been celebrated annually.
The term for Yalda night in Kurdish is Shawi Yalda, which has also become an idiom for any night that for some reason feels long.
Our photographer Satreep Osman attended this year's Yalda night in Sulaimani.
