In a tradition stemming from Zoroastrianism, Kurds celebrate Yalda – the winter solstice. Yalda is an Assyrian word meaning ‘birth.’

Families and friends gather to dance, sing, eat, drink, and read poetry through the longest night of the year to ward off evil and welcome the light of dawn.
