The Erbil Museum for Rocks and Gemstones, situated in Erbil’s Citadel, is one of the city's best known tourist spots.

Museum owner Sarbast Majeed says what is on display is the product of 35 years of valuable gem collection.

The first of its kind in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, the museum was originally located in Shaqlawa, in the northeast of Erbil province. It was relocated to the capital upon the order of Erbil Governor Nawzad Hadi in April 2016.

The Citadel is a fortified tell in the centre of the Kurdish capital. Believed to have been built by the Assyrians over 6,000 years ago, it is among the oldest continuously inhabited sites in the world.

Parts of the citadel have become a tourist attraction, with a souvenir shop, textile and costume museums, and a Kurdish music archive.

UNESCO designated the Citadel a World Heritage Site in 2014.
