DERALUK, Kurdistan Region — Tucked into the mountains of the Kurdistan Region is Gali Sherana resort that offers people from elsewhere in Iraq a welcome relief from the blistering summer heat.
Gali Sherana resort in Deraluk town of Amedi district, Duhok province, was recognized as a tourist site by the Kurdistan Regional Government 5 years ago.
"This area is really beautiful, there's a huge demand for this nature. Service is very good. Everything is available... parking, tents and everything that a family uses to relax," Muhanad Salih told Rudaw.
According to statistics from the Duhok Tourism Directorate, the number of tourists has increased by 35 percent from 2018.
"I'm coming from Mosul. I'm going to stay around until the situation is Mosul is calm. It's an amazing place; the waterfall is amazing. The air and everything else is so cool," Hassan Safwan said while on a visit.
Temperatures soar above 45 Celsius in some parts of Iraq. The mountains, waterfalls, and rivers of the Kurdistan Region provide a welcomed escape for some Iraqis which had suffered from years under Islamic State (ISIS) rule.
Gali Sherana is 90 away from Duhok’s city center.
"We’ve created several markets this year with some restaurants and modern bazaars. Based on the plans of tourism directorate, we’ve built 100 high-quality cabanas in the area. We provide the tourists with very good service and we welcome all of those who visit our Region," detailed resort owner Harman Sidqi.
On a normal day about 2,000 people visit the resort.
