ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Monday received a letter from UK Prime Minister Liz Truss highlighting the strong relationship and mutual values the Region and the Kingdom share.

The recently elected UK PM thanked President Barzani for attending the funeral of late British monarch Queen Elizabeth II, and expressed her wishes to build upon her country’s “strong relationship” with the Kurdistan Region as she assumes her new role in 10 Downing Street.

Truss stressed that London and Erbil will continue to cooperate on their mutual values and priorities, especially in the fields of “security and counterterrorism, freedom of expression and education,” according to a statement from President Barzani’s office.

Kurdistan Region’s PM Masrour Barzani also received a letter from his UK counterpart on Monday, in which she expressed her delight towards the relations between the Region and the UK which remain “as strong as ever today,” according to a statement from PM Barzani’s office.

The UK’s commitment to preserving the Kurdistan Region’s security and stability was also emphasized in Truss’ letter, expressing hope to further strengthen relations between Erbil and London.

The UK has been an important ally of the Kurdistan Region for decades. Thirty years ago, former British premier Sir John Major played a key role in declaring a no-fly zone in the north of Iraq, providing a safe haven from the Baath regime that allowed Kurds to gain some autonomy. An Erbil street was named after him in April 2021.
