ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A large fire broke out at an Erbil petrol station early Saturday morning. No casualties have been reported.
The fire erupted while staff were transferring fuel from a tanker truck to the station’s storage tank in Erbil’s Farmanbaran neighborhood, Rudaw’s Dilnya Rahman reported from the scene.
Jangi Majid, the owner of the gas station, told Rudaw that the fire took place during the unloading process.
"The gasoline that arrived at the gas station today was supposed to be distributed tomorrow. There was no distribution today and the gas station was empty, which is why there was less damage," he said.
The station sells subsidised fuel supported by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
Around 18 firefighting crews were attempting to put out the blaze, which was brought under control after several hours.
No one was killed but several people were injured. The fire also caused significant material damage.
“I was here when it occurred. I suddenly saw the rear areas burning. It made a big sound,” said an eyewitness.
Another eyewitness said that the windows of nearby houses and a school were broken.
