ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The body of a 13-year old boy was found in Erbil on Sunday after he had gone missing for 13 days.
Ayoub Ahmed left home in Erbil’s Karez (Qarabu) neighbourhood on January 24 but never returned. He was last spotted on CCTV footage walking over a stream near his house.
Erbil’s police department was informed on Sunday that a body had been found near Kasnazan neighborhood and following investigation, they found out the body was Ayoub.
“It is unclear whether he had suffocated to death or was strangled,” Diler Najar, head of Erbil’s police department told Rudaw.
Ayoub’s father, Ahmed Abdullah, previously told Rudaw’s Ranja Jamal that Ayoub suffered from epilepsy, one of the most common disorders of the nervous system, but added that this is the first time his son goes missing.
The search for Ayoub continued for 13 days in Erbil. Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw had visited the family, promising to increase efforts to find the teenager, adding that Prime Minister Masrour Barzani had assigned him to find Ayoub as soon as possible. Ayoub was found, but not alive.
Erbil Governor’s office in a statement on Sunday said that their teams had been working in cooperation with civil defense units, Asayish forces, K9 units, Peshmerga forces, and aerial units for the past 13 days to find Ayoub.
