ERBIL, Kurdistan Region--A bomb planted earlier by Islamic State (ISIS)
militants in the recently liberated village of Bashir in southern Kirkuk
was triggered by Shiite militiamen, killing two, a Kurdish official in
Kirkuk said on Thursday.
"Today, near the Bashir village's [public] water tank, a bomb earlier planted by ISIS was triggered by [Shiite militia] Hashd al-Shaabi, killing two militants," Kirkuk’s Suburban Police Chief, Sarhad Qadir, told Rudaw.
Qadir added that the bomb was not defused by bomb disposal teams and today it went off.
"These two militants were from the Hashd al-Shaabi's Bashir regiment," who were based in the village after it was liberated by Peshmerga forces, said Qadir.
Kurdish forces reclaimed the Turkmen village of Bashir from ISIS last week. Control of the village had been fiercely contested by ISIS, Kurdish forces and Shiite militia. Its recapture marked another blow against the extremist group and pushed them further away from Kurdish defense lines.
