ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — A conference will be held in November to boost trade relations between the Kurdistan Region and the United States, according to a statement released on Tuesday by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

Announcement of the decision to hold the trade conference followed meetings between David Copley, the US State Department's Deputy Assistant Secretary for Iraq Affairs and top KRG officials in Erbil on Tuesday.

Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region Masrour Barzani and Copley focused their discussion on developing their economic relations, according to the statement from the prime minister's office

Copley “acknowledged the US remains a steadfast ally to the Kurdistan Region, and the importance of further strengthening ties with the Kurdistan Region, with a particular focus on trade relations,” read the statement.

“As part of efforts to boost trade, a conference will be held next month to promote the Kurdistan Region as a preferred trading partner and encourage US investment.”

The statement did not detail when in November or where the conference would take place.

Safeen Dizayee, head of KRG’s Department of Foreign Relations, later tweeted that “strengthening bilateral relations, trade and investment” where among the topics of discussion.

Also discussed at the meeting were relations between Erbil-Baghdad, to which prime minister Barzani said the KRG is committed to finding a peaceful and political solution for Erbil-Baghdad outstanding issues. The Kurdistan Region also "thanked the US for its ongoing support.”

Copley and his accompanying delegation met later in the day with President of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani.

President Barzani and Copley “stressed the need to boost the US relations with Iraq, especially in terms of economy and creating business opportunities for the US private sector and investment in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region,” according to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.
