The astonishing Binlise pond — 3,160 meters above sea level and located at Mount Halgurd — is a largely unseen tourist attraction.

The accumulation of waters from heavy rain and snowfall creates the pond during the summer months.

The placid waters add a fascinating natural feature to the Balakayati area, about 160 kilometers northeast of the Kurdistan Region's capital of Erbil.

Even during summertime, temperature here does not exceed 12 Celsius, while the urban cities of the Kurdistan Region are baking in 45-plus weather.

Because of the eight year Iraq-Iran war in 1980s, very few people have been able to make their way to the fascinating spot as the areas were heavily mined and contain unexploded bombs.

Yet, some mountaineers have made the trek to cool themselves off.
