DOMIZ 2 CAMP, Kurdistan Region – Residents of Domiz 2 refugee camp in Duhok province have complained of water shortages which force them to rely on bottled water.

“Water is provided once every three to four days for only 45 minutes. This is not enough for us. There is no water supply for even an hour,” Hevin Mohammed told Rudaw.

The camp is home to refugees from northeast Syria (Rojava).

“We usually buy water every two days. Sometimes we buy it once a week. For drinking water, we buy a bottle every day for 1,000 dinars ($0.68),” added Fadi Sleman.

“Today, the air cooler didn't work because there was no water. There are nine people in our family. Dishes and clothes need to be washed. Children have to take showers. What can you do with only one barrel of water?” said Ezzadin Hassan.

Earlier this year, the German government launched the Fayda water project.

The project was designed to benefit 200,000 residents in the Fayda sub-district, including in Domiz 1 and 2 camps, but it has not been finished.

“The project will benefit both Domiz 1 and 2 camps, but it hasn't been fully completed yet. Therefore, a water crisis exists in the camps, particularly in Domiz 2,” said Karwan Zaki, spokesperson for Duhok’s Directorate of Migration and Crisis Response.
