KIRKUK, Kurdistan Region – An Arab member of the Kirkuk provincial council has survived an alleged assassination attempt.
Jawad al-Janabi is a member of the council’s Kurdish-led Brayati list. He told Rudaw that six bullets hit his car when he was out with his brother Tuesday afternoon. The shots came from a Toyota Corolla, he said.
This is the third assassination attempt against him in five years, Janabi said.
In the council’s controversial decision earlier this year to fly the Kurdistan flag in the city, Janabi voted in support of the move.
His viewpoints in the council “created many enemies for me,” he said, adding that he predicts this will not be the last attempt on his life.
In March, the Kirkuk Provincial Council voted to raise the Kurdistan flag over government buildings alongside the Iraqi one. Members of the Iraqi Turkmen Front, who opposed the decision, have filed a case against the council in a Baghdad administrative court.
The motive for the attack on Janabi is not known at this time.
