ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The governor of Duhok province has said tens of thousands of displaced families are living outside refugee camps in the Kurdistan region.
“We have built 22 refugee camps in Duhok for 42,000 families, but still a large number of families are living outside the camps,” said Farhand Atrushi, speaking on a segment of “Rudawi Amro” about the impact of refugees on the demography of Kurdistan.
Atrushi went on to estimate that 30,000 families are living without the shelter of camps, adding that central government funds given to Mosul province to help provide for refugees fleeing to Duhok and Erbil camps has yet to materialize.
The governor said he believes the scale of the problem is being overlooked.
“According to UN statistics, we officially have 8,157 families living in unfinished construction sites, but we believe the number is much larger than they have estimated,” Atrushi said.
