BASHIR, Kurdistan Region – One hundred and thirty four Peshmerga were awarded medals of bravery near Bashir town in southern Kirkuk province on Tuesday. The commended soldiers had all been wounded in battles to oust ISIS from the area.
Ari Awat remembered his fellow Peshmerga who died by his side. “We reached this day by his courage,” he said.
Bashir fell to ISIS in June 2014. It was retaken by Peshmerga in early May 2016 with the support of coalition airstrikes and Hashd al-Shaabi forces.
