ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Turkish air forces bombarded nearby a populated area in northern Duhok province on Thursday evening, sparking fears among the villagers, according to a local official.
The bombardment near Chalke village in the Kani Masi sub-district began around 6:30 pm, mayor Sarbast Sabri told Rudaw.
“It did not cause any casualties, but caused fear among villagers,” he said.
Turkey’s defense ministry has not immediately reported the activity.
Turkey regularly carries out air and ground operations against alleged positions of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Turkey and within the Kurdistan Region’s borders. The Kani Masi area is frequently attacked, driving villagers out of their homes.
The PKK is an armed group struggling for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey. It is considered a terrorist organization by Ankara.
