Erbil’s Turkmen gathered in front of the city’s UN compound on Thursday to protest the outcome of Iraq’s May 12 parliamentary election, which they believe was rigged.
The Turkmen, an ethnic minority in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, were divided along a number of lines in the election race. While many Turkmen parties endorsed the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and had a joint candidate running on the KDP’s list in Erbil, nine other candidates ran on separate tickets.
Five ran for the Turkmen Front’s list, while four ran for incumbent Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s Nasr (Victory) Alliance, thereby dispersing the Turkmen vote.
There are up to 50,000 Turkmen in Erbil, but the splintering of their vote prevented them from obtaining a seat. They have five quota seats in the Kurdistan Regional Parliament, but no quota in the Iraqi parliament.
