ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani received on Thursday the head of the United Nations mission in Iraq Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert in Erbil, discussing the formation of a new government in Baghdad.

“Pleased to welcome Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, Special Representative for the United Nations Mission for Iraq. We discussed developments in Iraq after the election of the House of Representatives' Presidency and efforts to form the new Iraqi Cabinet,” Barzani said in a statement.

“We both agreed that the new Iraqi government should be a government that protects the rights of all of its peoples; leads to stability and real partnership, and supports constitutional solutions to Erbil-Baghdad disputes,” he added.

Iraq held a snap parliamentary election on October 10. So far, only the presidency of the parliament has been elected. The MPs have to elect a new president by February 8. The president will later assign the candidate of the biggest parliamentary alliance to form a new government.

UNAMI said in a statement that its chief discussed the “current political situation in the country and the region” with PM Barzani and his deputy Qubad Talabani on Thursday.
