ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga ministry denied that the United States will establish a military base in the region.

“There is no plan for setting up any military base belonging to the US or other countries under the coalition in the Kurdistan Region,” Jabar Yawar, chief of staff for the Peshmerga ministry, told Rudaw on Thursday.

Yawar continued that information circulating regarding this assertion was not correct.

“The operation room has been in Kurdistan since the beginning of the war against ISIS and it’s not something new,” said Yawar, referring to the US-led coalition operation room in Erbil where coalition forces and the Peshmerga coordinate airstrikes on the Islamic State.

Iraqi and Iranian media reported that the Kurdistan Regional Government and the United States, in the military Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two nations last week, had agreed that the US would establish five military bases in the Kurdish region.
