ERBIL, Kurdistan Region -  Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) endowment ministry decided on Tuesday to allow people to hold wakes after nearly two years of ban. However, coronavirus-related preventative measures should be implemented.

When first cases of the pandemic were recorded in the Kurdistan Region in early 2020, the coronavirus-related crisis cell decided to ban wakes and fine those who disobey.

Despite a recent surge in the coronavirus cases in the Kurdistan Region, the endowment ministry decided on Tuesday to re-allow wakes.

"Wakes should last only for a day and begin after the noon prayer," is the first condition the ministry has set for the holders. "Face masks should be worn and there should be distance [between prayers]."

Other conditions are not related to the pandemic, such as all wakes should be held in mosques and the sound of the speakers should not be too loud.

The wakes used to last three days, then they were reduced to two days by the KRG before the ban in 2020.

Kurdistan Region recorded 1,497 new cases of coronavirus and three deaths on Tuesday. It has recorded a total of 400,62 cases and 7,193 deaths so far.
