“I received your condolences for the death of my wife, Shuhla, with great gratitude. I wish you well, [signed] Nawshirwan Mustafa, 23 March 17,” reads the letter to President Barzani, which was shown to Rudaw.
Mustafa's wife Shuhla Ali Saeed passed away on March 17 in Sulaimani after a battle with cancer.
The two had been married since 1981. She had no official role in politics.
Gorran splintered from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in 2009.
In October 2015, the speaker of the Kurdistan Region's parliament Yousif Muhammed, a Gorran member, was told to leave the capital of Erbil and barred from returning to his post after disagreements between KDP and Gorran.
Earlier this week Muhammed spoke with Omed Khoshnaw, head of the KDP’s parliamentary bloc, for the first time in two years on the occasion of Newroz, the new year holiday celebrated by Kurdish people, symbolizing renewal and rebirth for some.
