DUHOK, Kurdistan Region - Safar Sulaiman is a skilled mechanic in Duhok province who armoured vehicles for Peshmerga forces during the Islamic State (ISIS) war from 2014 onwards.

He is now turning small cars into giant ones.

“In the beginning of the Daesh [ISIS] war, a friend of mine brought a Hummer which I changed to a military one by adding a thicker [armour] plate. It looked nice. It is still on the frontlines in Suhela.

"I love making vehicles higher,” he told Rudaw.

He alters the height, length and design of vehicles as well as rebuilding vehicles from the parts of old ones.

It took him four months to rebuilt a giant car whose engine, he claims, is much stronger than that of a normal four wheel drive vehicle.

Harman Abdul-Razad, head of an off-road group, told Rudaw that they have named it “the Tiger of Barzan,” a village in Erbil province.

The topography of Kurdistan Region’s bordering areas require four wheel drive vehicles that are tough enough to survive on bumpy roads.
