ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Ankara has blocked a number of newspapers and online news agencies including Rudaw digital portal following the government’s heavy bombardment of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) positions, Rudaw reporter said.
“The Rudaw website is blocked and people have no access to the digital portal, as a result users of Rudaw’s various news applications could not benefit from website’s news services since this morning,” Rudaw reporter said on Saturday.
A number of news websites have been blocked with a decision by the Turkish Presidency of Telecommunication (TIB), five of them publishing news in Kurdish and Turkish.
The decision comes one day after Turkish warplanes carried out airstrikes against Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) bases in the border areas with Kurdistan region of Iraq late Friday.
The attacks reportedly struck Rat, Metina, Gare, Haftanin and Havashin in Qandil Mountains located in Kurdistan region.
“Tension and clashes are rising between civilians and security forces in some Kurdish cities such as Amed and Batman,” added Mashala Dakak, Rudaw reporter in Turkey.
Casualties have yet to be assessed, but according to witnesses from the region, four PKK militants were killed in the airstrikes.
These airstrikes came after PKK’s armed wing (HPG) claimed responsibility for assassinating two Turkish policemen on Wednesday, July 22.
Rudaw digital portal, Bas News and Firat News, which have been blocked since Saturday morning, are covering regional events including Turkey-PKK clashes and Kurdish issue in Turkey.
